La Plata Canyon cleaves through the San Juan National Forest at a gradient so steep that its waterfalls remain inaccessible to standard vehicles for nine months of the year.
County Road 124 climbs 3,200 vertical feet over fourteen miles of switchbacks, passing through four distinct biotic zones before terminating near Kennebec Pass at 11,400 feet. The route was surveyed in 1879 as a supply corridor for silver camps in the La Plata mining district; by 1893, when the silver market collapsed, the road reverted to Forest Service jurisdiction and has remained a high-clearance four-wheel-drive track ever since.
Today the Durango jeep waterfall tour follows that original mining grade, threading between Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir as the canyon narrows. The first cascade appears at mile marker seven, where Bedrock Creek drops eighty feet over a basalt ledge into a plunge pool fringed with columbine and paintbrush. The canyon's geology is a textbook example of Precambrian basement rock uplifted during the Laramide orogeny. The waterfalls themselves tumble over granitic gneiss dated to 1.7 billion years, among the oldest exposed rock in Colorado. Glacial striations are visible on the canyon walls above 9,800 feet, marking the extent of Pleistocene ice. In June and early July, snowmelt swells the creeks to peak flow, and the falls roar at volumes ten times their late-summer trickle.
Afternoon thunderstorms build with clockwork regularity from mid-July through August, making morning departures the standard for 4×4 excursions. The Forest Service maintains no facilities beyond the trailhead vault toilet at mile three; the canyon is designated a roadless area under the 1984 Colorado Wilderness Act, prohibiting motorized travel off the established corridor. Aspen groves at mid-elevation turn gold by mid-September, and the road typically closes after the first heavy snow in October, reopening when the snowpack recedes in late May.
